Botulinum Toxin Treatments (Botox® & Dysport®,ECt...)

What is Botulinum Toxin?

Botox and Dysport belong to a class of treatments called neuromodulators. They work by temporarily blocking nerve signals to the small facial muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles — the lines that form when you frown, squint, or raise your eyebrows. With those muscles relaxed, the skin above them smooths out, and repeated muscle contraction (which is what deepens wrinkles over time) is reduced. Results aren't immediate: most clients see initial changes within 3–5 days, with full results at the two-week mark, lasting on average 3–4 months.

Botox vs. Dysport — What's the Difference?

Both are botulinum toxin type A and work the same way. The main differences are onset speed and spread: Dysport tends to kick in slightly faster (2–3 days) and diffuses a bit more, which some injectors prefer for larger areas like the forehead. Botox is more precise, often preferred for smaller, targeted areas like crow's feet. Neither is objectively "better" — the right choice depends on your facial anatomy and goals, which we assess during your consultation.

Is Botox Right for You?

Botox works best for dynamic wrinkles (lines caused by muscle movement) rather than static wrinkles (lines visible even at rest, usually better addressed with dermal filler or a combination approach). Good candidates are generally:

  • Adults 18+ starting to notice fine lines from repeated facial expressions

  • Looking for a non-surgical, low-downtime way to soften forehead lines, frown lines, or crow's feet

  • Dealing with excessive underarm or palm sweating (hyperhidrosis)

  • Wanting a subtle "lip flip" or jaw slimming effect

Botox is not recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a known allergy to botulinum toxin, have certain neuromuscular conditions (e.g., myasthenia gravis), or have an active skin infection at the injection site. We review your medical history at your free consultation to confirm you're a good candidate.

What to Expect: Before, During, and After

Before your appointment: Avoid alcohol and blood-thinning medications (aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil) for 24–48 hours before treatment to minimize bruising. Come with a clean face, free of makeup, in the treatment area.

During your session: Treatment takes 10–20 minutes. A fine needle is used to inject small amounts of the product into targeted muscles. Most clients describe the sensation as a quick pinch — no numbing cream is typically needed, though it can be requested for sensitive areas.

After your session: You can return to normal activities immediately, but avoid the following for 24 hours: rubbing or massaging the treated area, lying down flat, intense exercise, alcohol, and excessive heat (saunas, hot showers). Mild redness, small bumps at injection sites, or slight bruising can occur and typically resolve within a few hours to a couple of days.

Safety & Aftercare

Botox is one of the most studied and widely performed cosmetic treatments worldwide, with a strong safety record when administered by a trained injector. Temporary side effects can include mild swelling, redness, or bruising at injection sites, and occasionally a mild headache in the first 24–48 hours. Rare side effects include temporary eyelid or brow drooping if the product migrates from the treatment area — this is why proper technique and dosing (assessed at your consultation) matter.

To protect your results: avoid touching or massaging the treated area for 24 hours, stay upright for 4 hours post-treatment, and avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and heat exposure for the rest of the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many units will I need?

Unit count depends on the area(s) treated, muscle strength, and your goals. As a general guide: forehead lines often need 10–20 units, frown lines 15–25 units, and crow's feet 5–15 units per side. We determine your exact dosage during your free consultation.

Does Botox hurt?

Most clients describe it as a quick pinch. The needles used are very fine, and treatment takes only a few minutes.

When will I see results?

Initial effects appear within 3–5 days, with full results visible at around 2 weeks.

Is Botox safe?

Yes — Botox is Health Canada-approved and one of the most researched cosmetic treatments available, with decades of safety data when administered by a properly trained provider.

What's the difference between Botox and dermal filler?

Botox relaxes muscles to reduce movement-related wrinkles (forehead, frown lines, crow's feet). Filler adds volume to areas that have lost structure (cheeks, lips, nasolabial folds). Many clients combine both for a full facial rejuvenation plan.

Can I wear makeup after treatment?

Yes, but wait at least 4 hours and avoid rubbing the treated area when applying it.
